Natural Terrains

The game board starts out made up of natural terrains and water. Some natural terrains can be created by landwork.

Don't think of natural terrains as merely "empty space" to be built over. They require very little work and provide many materials that you need for other purposes. Other sources of food, such as agriculture, can occasionally backfire due to the amount of labour required — but a city will rarely starve if it has plenty of natural terrains. For these reasons, your cities will generally do better if you protect some natural terrains as you grow, particularly forests.
